Full Moon in Aquarius

Full Moon in Aquarius

The moon is on her way to being full this Sunday, August 22 at 7:02 am in the airy sign of Aquarius.

Full moons occur every month when the sun and moon are in opposite signs at the exact same degree. For this particular full moon the sun will be at 29 degrees Leo while the moon will be at 29 degrees Aquarius. This is the second full moon in Aquarius with the previous being on July 23.

Zodiac Facts: Aquarius & Leo

Every zodiac sign belongs to one of the four elements; fire, earth, air or water. Aquarius is an air sign meaning communication, mental activity and the sharing of ideas takes central stage. Aquarius is a cerebral sign favoring analytical thinking over the processing of feelings. I mentioned in last month’s blog that many people mistake Aquarius for a water sign because of it’s Waterbearer symbol.

Every sign belongs to one of the three modalities; cardinal, fixed or mutable. A sign’s modality refers to that sign’s nature and attitude. Being a fixed sign Aquarius has staying power and is determined to stay the path. The shadow side of the fixed nature is a resistance to change.

Every sign has a ruling planet and in the case of the Waterbearer that planet is Uranus. In astrology Uranus is associated with sudden change, disruption, surprises, technology, originality, rebellion and eccentricity. Uranus can have a shocking and volatile nature and in certain astrological circles is referred to as the Great Awakener. Having our lives disrupted and getting a major wake-up call is a common occurrence when Uranus is active in our chart by transit.

Every sign is associated with one of the twelves astrological houses and for Aquarius that’s the 11th House. This sector of the astrological chart is related to social groups, friendships, hopes, dreams and wishes. Hopes, dreams, wishes and friendships will be key themes in our lives when we have planets moving through our 11th House.

We also need to look at the sign placement of the sun during this full moon which is Leo. Leo is a fire sign meaning passion, enthusiasm, and courage are highlighted. Fire signs and Leo in particular has a passion and flair for the dramatic and theatrical. Like Aquarius, Leo is a fixed sign. The sun and moon are considered luminaries in astrology and Leo is ruled by the sun. The sun is the center of our solar system, the single point that all the other planets revolve around; like the sun, Leo is built for the spotlight and center of attention.

While Aquarius is associated with the 11th House of groups of people and friends, Leo is linked to the 5th House which is related to self-expression.

Full Moon in Aquarius

As I mentioned above full moons occur every month when the sun and moon are in opposition to one another; this opposition creates a sense of tension. It’s during a full moon when we might be at a point where we need to make a decision. This is also the time of the month when a light is being cast on a part of our lives that we want to keep hidden or secret. It’s during a full moon when we’re being given a chance to get honest about who we are and what we really want.

We can see that some of the tension between Leo and Aquarius results from the focus on the group (Aquarius) vs yourself (Leo). If we’re in the habit of thinking what will be best for everyone it may be time to focus more on ourselves. In relationships between opposite signs, each sign involved needs a little of what their opposite sign has to offer. In the case of Leo and Aquarius, Leo sometimes needs to step out of the spotlight and think about what’s best for the group while Aquarius at times needs to let go of the “we’re all in this together” mindset and think more about themselves.

We can also look at this from an elemental perspective. During an Aquarius full moon we may need to act from a place of passion (Leo/fire) instead of over-analyzing (air/Aquarius) a situation.

Rebellion is a popular keyword associated with both the sign of Aquarius and the ruling planet Uranus. So, if you’ve been following “the rules” to keep others happy you may find yourself ready to break free regardless of what others may think of you. In fact, freedom and independence are two more popular keywords linked to Aquarius.

Jupiter & the Moon

Jupiter is the planet of good fortune, expansion, optimism, philosophy and higher education and will be conjunct to this full moon by less than three degrees. This Jupiter/Moon aspect is actually a feel good transit. The moon relates to our feelings and as mentioned above Jupiter relates to good luck and expansion, so when we put these together we get a feeling (moon) of good luck and optimism. The moon is also related to home so we may decide to rearrange our home or a room to make it brighter and more comfortable. Jupiter helps us see things from a higher perspective and the moon is related to the past, so we may have an “aha” moment where we realize how certain events in our past had to happen in order to bring us to our current circumstances.
