New moon in Cancer: Eclipse and Solstice

New moon in Cancer: Eclipse and Solstice

This Sunday June 21the moon will be new in the watery sign of Cancer at 1:41 am CST.  This is a loaded new moon because it’s also a Solar Eclipse and the Summer Solstice.  First, new moons are about new beginnings, it’s time to let the past go and welcome the new.  Solar eclipses only occur on a new moon.  During a solar eclipse the moon is between the Earth and the sun and partially or totally blocks the light of the sun.  Solar eclipses are basically heavy duty new moons; the new beginning associated with a new moon could be especially potent and uncomfortable during an eclipse.  Maybe you’ve been needing change for quite some time but you’re too scared to make a move; the solar eclipse could blast you out of your comfort zone.

Eclipses can bring about those important turning points in your life where something ended and something new began.  These changes aren’t always uncomfortable you could get a new job, a job promotion or maybe even sign for a new house on or around a solar eclipse.

Because the moon blocks the sun all things moon related take center stage; things like feelings, psychic powers, dreams, and the Divine Feminine.  Cancer is a water sign meaning feelings are a priority.  The moon is the natural ruler of Cancer so the moon is right at home here.  This would actually be a good new moon to make a wish for a new relationship. If you’ve been thinking about starting a family, there couldn’t be a more perfect new moon.  Great crystals for this new moon would be moonstone and rose quartz.

Every year the Summer Solstice is also the first day of Cancer, this is the day that the sun hits the Tropic of Cancer.  This is important because Western astrology, the astrology most of us know, is based on the path of the sun from our view here on Earth not on the actual constellations; this is known as Tropical astrology.  At the Summer Solstice the sun is at it’s highest peak in the sky and afterward the sun will begin it’s descent. The Summer Solstice is also the longest day of the year and the shortest night.  In astrology the sun is the most important planet in our chart, it’s where we shine.  If you haven’t done so already, really get to know your sun sign, make sure you are embracing and radiating the positive aspects and not the negative ones.  If you don’t embrace your sun sign you’ll never be happy in life.

Mercury retrograde began on June 18 and will last until July 12.  The spiritual purpose behind Mercury retrograde is to “unplug”, get some downtime each day.  I think taking a Zen approach is the best way to deal with Mercury retrograde. A Zen approach means, over the next three weeks cease fighting everything and everyone; take things in stride and accept what is.  Acceptance seems to be the magic key during Mercury retrograde.
