New Moon in Leo: Light Your Fire
The moon will be new in the sign of Leo, Wednesday, July 31st, at 10:12 pm CST. New moons occur when the sun and moon are in the same sign at the exact same degree; this is known as a conjunction in astrology. The energy of a new moon is great for new beginnings, setting new intentions, and making new wishes.
The sun, moon, Venus, and Mars will create a stellium in the sign of Leo. A stellium occurs when four or more planets are lined up in the same sign. Leo is a fire sign, meaning it can be warm, passionate, dramatic, and impulsive. Leo is the natural ruler of the 5th house, the area of your chart that is associated with self-expression, creativity, romance, and children. The planetary ruler of Leo is the sun, that most important part of our chart that allows us to be brilliant, radiant, and oh-so-regal (Leo rules royalty).
When we embrace and step into our sun sign we shine. We ignore our sun at our own peril. At some time or another, we’ve all been in those life circumstances where deep down we knew we were betraying ourselves; we weren’t showing up as our most authentic, brilliant self. Maybe we got scared, or we were afraid we weren’t going to get something we really wanted. Or maybe we wanted someone to like us, so we hid our light to keep from burning so brightly because to do so could cause a confrontation or worse—a loss.
Think of Simba in the Lion King. Simba forgot he was a king until he was visited by the ghost of Mufasa who tells him it’s time to take his rightful place. A new moon in Leo can do the same thing; remind us to take our rightful place. Interestingly, Mercury retrograde ends on this same day.
The tarot card associated with this new moon is the Five of Wands. Wands are associated with the fire signs, and the Five of Wands is specifically linked to Leo. In some decks this card is named the card of struggle or strife. The struggle is associated with the creative aspect of Leo; we may be struggling to release our creativity.
We don’t think our work is good enough or we fear criticism from others, so we live the life of a “closeted” artist. We hide our work. In his marvelous book An Audience of One, author Srinivas Rao challenges us to ignore the external rewards of creativity and reclaim our creativity for its own sake. Reclaiming our creativity can have a therapeutic effect on us and increase our well-being.
The day of the new moon falls on the 31st. In numerology, the number three is associated with creativity and communication, while the number one relates to individuality. When we add the numbers together, we get 4 (3 +1=4) the number associated with structure, order, and limitation.
What do you need to express? If you’re feeling stuck, bored, or like you’re spinning your wheels, ask yourself, how are you holding yourself back? Are you trying to force yourself to fit in a situation that you’ve actually outgrown? The energy of the 31/4 is about finding ways to express yourself and move past your limitations. One of my favorite affirmations from the late, great Louise Hay is the past has no power over me because I am willing to learn and to change.
