The moon is on her way to being new this Wednesday, October 6 in the airy sign of Libra at 6:05 am CST.
New moons occur every month when the sun and moon are in the same sign at the same degree; in astrology this is known as a conjunction. For this current lunation the sun and moon will be in the sign of Libra 13 degrees.
Zodiac Facts: Libra
Every astrological sign belongs to one of the four elements; fire, earth, air and water and Libra belongs to the air element. Being an air sign means thinking, analysis and communication take center stage. Libra is the only zodiac sign that is represented by an inanimate object, the scales, all other zodiac signs are represented by an animal or human. Combining Libra’s air element (thinking) with the symbol of the scales means Libras take decision making very seriously; they want to make sure they weigh all the options in a given situation. A big lesson for Libra is accepting the fact there will never be a perfect decision.
Every zodiac sign belongs to one of the three modalities; cardinal, fixed or mutable and Libra belongs to the cardinal modality. The cardinal signs like to start and initiate things; they are the doers of the zodiac. Since Libra is associated with relationships they like to initiate (cardinal modality) relationships. Being an air sign Libras are natural communicators so we can also say Libra likes to initiate (cardinal modality) conversations.
Each of the astrological signs is ruled by a particular planet and for Libra that planetary ruler is Venus, the goddess of love and beauty. This connection with Venus gives Libra an eye for beauty and a capacity for warmth and connection with others. While Libra’s opposite sign Aries thinks “me” Libra thinks in terms of “we”. Currently, Libra’s ruling planet Venus is in the watery sign of Scorpio until October 8. This placement of Venus in the deep and mysterious sign of Scorpio adds intensity to our relationships meaning we’re pushed to explore our deeper feelings in this area of our lives.
Each sign is associated with one of the twelve astrological houses and for Libra that’s the 7th House of relationships; this includes marriage and open enemies. If we have natal planets placed here or when we have planets moving through this sector of our chart by transit, relationships will take on an added importance.
New Moon in Libra
As mentioned earlier new moons occur every month when the sun and moon are conjunct meaning they are in the same sign at the same degree. New moons are associated with new beginnings and are a perfect time to set new intentions and to make wishes. Libra energy is quite strong during this lunation; not only are the sun and moon in this sign but so are Mercury and Mars. The most obvious area that will be highlighted during this new moon will be relationships; if problems have been brewing beneath the surface in a relationship a new moon in Libra can bring those issues to the surface, not to make us or the other person miserable but to deal with them in an honest manner. Libra energy loves peace and harmony and these are good qualities to embrace but sometimes we have to embrace the opposite (confrontation) in order to solve a problem in our relationships. During this new moon in Libra we may be confronted with someone who holds a very different perspective on a situation than we do and we may need to take that into account; avoiding confrontation is the shadow side of Libra. Balance is another popular keyword associated with Libra so during this new moon restoring a sense of balance in our lives can become a priority.
Mercury Retrograde in Libra
Mercury is currently retrograde in the sign of Libra until October 18. Other than the infamous technological problems we can have during this period our communication with others can also go haywire. As mentioned above, if we have issues in a relationship that need to be addressed we may decide to do so during this Mercury retrograde. Our minds can turn dark and negative because we’ve allowed hurt and pain from the past to fester. However, we do need to be careful at this time about what we say, in fact we may want to take some time to ourselves to think about what we want to say and how we want to say it. Some couples may decide to go into couples counseling at this time.
As usual, I would warn against signing any important documents at this time like signing on a house or for a car. If you absolutely must and sometimes we can’t wait for Mercury retrograde to be over, I just tell people to really look over any contracts very carefully making sure you understand the terms and conditions. I would also give yourself some time to think things through before establishing a business partnership. One other factor during this Mercury retrograde is the positive aspect it will receive from Jupiter during the week of the new moon. Jupiter’s positive aspect to Mercury will help us become more philosophical about our lives in a positive way by revealing the bigger picture to us.
The Moon & Tarot
Every new or full moon is associated with a tarot card and for this particular full moon that tarot card is the Three of Swords. This card can be quite shocking when you see it, a heart pierced by three swords but this card brings to our attention a truth we can no longer hide from; we realize that ignorance is not bliss. The only way out is by accepting things as they really are not as we wish them to be.
