New Moon Solar Eclipse in Gemini

New Moon Solar Eclipse in Gemini

The moon is on her way to being new this Thursday June 10 in the airy sign of Gemini at 5:53 am CST.

New moons occur every month when the sun and moon are in the exact same sign at the exact same degree; in astrology this is known as a conjunction.  For this particular lunation the sun and moon are conjunct at 19 degrees of Gemini.  Solar eclipses only occur on a new moon.  During a solar eclipse the moon is between the Earth and the sun and partially or totally blocks out the light of the sun.  The current Mercury retrograde is conjunct both the sun and moon in the sign of Gemini.

Zodiac Facts:  Gemini

Keywords for Gemini:  communication, whimsy, contradiction, spontaneity, versatility, change, trickery, connection, information, duality, flirtation, discovery and curiosity.

Gemini is an air sign meaning communication and mental activity take center stage.  Air signs (Aquarius, Gemini and Libra) tend to be cerebral and favor analytical thinking.  All this mental activity can make the air signs appear detached and cold in the emotions department.  It’s not that the air signs don’t feel, they do, it just isn’t their primary way of engaging with the world.  All this cerebral energy has to go somewhere, hence the reason these three signs love to talk and socialize; parties in particular are custom made for Gemini.  With so many places to go and people to meet, Gemini can be ambivalent about commitment when it comes to romantic relationships.  Not ones to be tied down, the Twins need room to move.  In the realm of career and vocation, Gemini thrives best in environments where they can utilize their witty, charming communication skills.

Every sign belongs to a certain modality.  In astrology a modality refers to the nature and attitude of a zodiac sign and there are three modalities; cardinal, fixed and mutable.  Gemini belongs to the mutable modality meaning it’s a sign that can be flexible and adaptable.  There are four mutable signs; Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces and Gemini.  Unlike the fixed signs that can be a bit rigid, Gemini can adapt to change and new situations.  Represented by the Twins, Gemini intuitively understands there’s always two sides to every situation.  On the shadow side, Gemini’s tendency to get bored quickly manifests as a lack of staying power and the ability to finish what they started.

Every astrological sign is ruled by a planet and in the case of Gemini that planet is Mercury, the Roman messenger of the gods.  Mercury rules communication, understanding and intelligence.  Books, writing, magazines, translation, languages, newspapers, speaking, social media and broadcasting all fall under the rulership of Mercury.  Astronomically, Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system and is closest to the sun.  This zippy little planet takes a mere 88 days to orbit around the sun.  Mercury’s claim to fame in modern day astrology is it’s retrograde period; three and sometimes four times a year Mercury will appear to move backward for three weeks.  During this retrograde motion we can experience a breakdown in day to day communication and experience glitches with our computers and phones.  We are currently experiencing our second Mercury retrograde of the year that started on May 29 and will end on June 22.  It’s also best if you can avoid signing any major documents or contracts at this time.

Every zodiac sign is associated with one of the twelve astrological houses and for Gemini this is the 3rd House. The 3rd house rules communication, writing, learning, teaching, transportation, siblings, neighbors, neighborhoods, short trips, magazines, newspapers and letters.  Some or several of these topics will become more important in your life when you have planets transiting through this sector of your chart.  The 3rd house can also hold clues about how we communicate with others in our environment.

New Moon Solar Eclipse in Gemini

New moons occur every month and are associated with new beginnings, it’s time to let the past go and welcome the new.  Setting intentions and making wishes are perfect rituals for new moons.  You can think of solar eclipses as heavy duty new moons; the new beginnings associated with a new moon could be especially potent and uncomfortable during an eclipse.  Maybe you’ve been needing change for quite some time but you’ve been too scared to make a move; the solar eclipse could blast you out of your comfort zone.  Eclipses can bring about those important turning points in your life where something ends and something new begins.  These changes aren’t always bad or uncomfortable, you could get a new job, a job promotion or sign for a new house around a solar eclipse.  Regarding the last bit about signing papers, if you have to sign a document during a Mercury retrograde just be sure you read through everything and understand the fine print.

With Gemini’s association with learning and teaching some of us may be thinking about learning something new; this could come in the form of going back to school or signing up for a class.  If you go this education/learning route, be sure to keep a fluorite nearby; fluorite is a beautiful stone that encourages concentration and ordered thinking.

A lot of us are still reeling from all the craziness of last year and a solar eclipse in Gemini could amp up the mind chatter so think about carrying an amethyst, blue lace agate or rose quartz with you this week.  All three of these stones have a calming effect on an anxious mind.  If you’ve been experiencing insomnia, a Gemini/Mercury specialty, think about putting a howlite near your bed.

Curiosity is a keyword associated with Gemini, if we’ve become bored and stuck in our routines it may be time to shake things up.  Granted we can’t run away from our current lives but being stuck in a rut  can lead to frustration so it may be time to think about what we’re interested in and invest time in those topics or areas of our lives.

Mercury, the planet of communication, will be conjunct the moon, the planet of emotions and feelings. Put these two in the cosmic blender and we get communicating our feelings.  If words have been stuck in your throat it may be time to talk about how you feel.  I think everyone’s feeling a bit edgy after everything we’ve been through so this new moon in Gemini could trigger a healing process where we begin talking about and processing our feelings.
