There will be a new moon solar eclipse this Saturday morning at 4:58 am CST in the sign of Leo. Solar eclipses happen on new moons when the moon stands between the sun and Earth, blocking the light of the sun. This will be a partial eclipse, meaning the moon partially blocks the sun. During a total solar eclipse, the sun is completely blocked by the moon. New moons are about new beginnings, and eclipses shake us up and get us moving; that’s why an eclipse can sometimes bring about dramatic change in our lives.
Last month’s solar eclipse happened in the watery, sensitive, and emotional sign of Cancer, which has a very different energy from this month’s fiery Leo eclipse. Where the Cancer eclipse had us pulling inward into our emotional life, the Leo eclipse gives us a burst of warm energy and enthusiasm to step out into the world. Instead of hiding, you now feel the urge to be seen. What do you want to express? What’s been holding you back? In astrology there are twelve houses which basically represent twelve areas of life, and Leo rules the 5th house of creativity, self-expression, gambling, and romance. If you’ve been a person who feels like no one pays attention to you or what you want, now is the time to change that. If you’ve been someone who sits and waits on the side-lines while everyone else plays the field, now is the time to get off the bench. Not only does this eclipse occur in the sign of the lion, but it joins the sun, Mercury, and the north node in Leo.
Looking at the chart of this solar eclipse, we also see that Saturn is squaring Venus—a difficult aspect. Saturn represents restriction, lessons, and karma, while Venus rules love, relationships, and beauty; so there’s a good chance that you may need to re-evaluate some of your relationships. A wise friend once gave me some very sage advice. She told me the best relationships are the ones that are low maintenance with a high return rate. The second best relationships are the ones that might be high maintenance, but it pays off because there is a high return rate. The relationships she gets rid of are the ones that are high maintenance with a low return rate. Who needs it?! Looking at your own relationships, where are you giving too much and getting too little? Maybe it’s time to cut some ties.
And finally, Venus, the love planet, moved into Libra, the love sign, on August 6 and will be there until September 8. The imagery for Libra is the scales, symbolizing balance and fairness. I know in my own experience that I am at my most neurotic where love and relationships are involved because my obsessive need for attachment is in direct conflict with my compulsive need for freedom. As Venus moves through Libra in the next four weeks, we look for creative and imaginative ways to show up in a relationship without being completely swallowed by it or running away from it. Finding this balance between meeting the needs of others and meeting our own needs will become very important during this time.
As each of these important astrological aspects play out in the coming weeks, you may find yourself feeling more extroverted and placing a heavier emphasis on love, relationships, and social engagements. There will be a pull to take some risks—that now or never energy—and a desire to carefully evaluate who you take them with. Don’t be afraid to clean out your contacts list, but make sure that the people you keep in your corner are the ones who truly know how to support you.
