This Friday, June 21, marks the summer solstice and the longest day of the year. Astronomically, this event occurs when one of the earth’s poles has its maximum tilt toward the sun and the sun has reached its highest point in the sky, right over the Tropic of Cancer, making it the longest day of the year.
Astrologically, the summer solstice is always the first day of Cancer. In fact, the first day of each season is linked to one of the cardinal signs in astrology. The spring equinox is the first day of Aries, the summer solstice is the first day of Cancer, the fall equinox is the first day of Libra, and the winter solstice is the first day of Capricorn. All four signs are cardinal signs, meaning these signs are considered the self-starters of the zodiac who take it upon themselves to initiate things.
All four of these signs are linked to the angular houses in astrology—Aries is linked to the 1st House of self and identity, Cancer to the 4th House of family, home and emotions, Libra the 7th House of marriage and relationships, and Capricorn the 10th House of career and recognition. Angular houses are strong and forceful, and they have great impact on your birth chart. If you’re born with planets in these houses or have planets moving through one of these houses right now, that planet will most likely play a significant role in your life.
Spiritually, ancient cultures saw the summer solstice as a time to celebrate the sun, the return of light after a period of darkness. When someone asks, What’s your sign? The answer we all give is actually our sun sign. The sun is the most powerful part of your chart; it’s the life within you. Just like if we had no sun in the universe, we would have no life on this planet—the same is true in your astrological chart. The sun is what everything else in your chart revolves around. The sun is what brings your chart to life.
We can say the summer solstice is a time to reconnect with the light (the sun) within you. If you’ve become disconnected from your sun sign (your light within), then your life won’t work—you won’t be happy.
This week would be a great time to do a self-check. I know you’ve read all about your sign for many years now, but this week go back and read about the qualities of your sign and really think about whether you are embracing those qualities and sharing them with the world. Just like the sun can be covered up on a cloudy day, the same came happen to your internal sun.
Maybe the clouds have moved in and blocked your sunlight because being the person the universe intended you to be is inconvenient for other people. If you’re an Aries, are you being a bold and courageous Aries, or are you trying to be a Cancer because that’s what your family, husband, or wife wants you to be? Your sun sign is your gift to the world. It’s the person the universe intended you to be. As country-singer Dolly Parton once said, “Find out who you are, and then do it on purpose."
