The moon is on her way to being full this Monday, January 17 at 5:48 pm CST in the watery sign of Cancer.  Full moons occur every month when the sun and moon are in opposite signs at the exact same degree; for this particular lunation the sun will be at 27 degrees Capricorn with the moon at 27 degrees Cancer.  Full moons create a sense of tension, we can feel like we’re being pulled in two different directions and our goal is to find a sense of balance.  Full moons can bring a process or situation to completion and cast light on what is hidden in our lives.

Zodiac Facts:  Cancer & Capricorn

Every zodiac sign belongs to one of the four elements and Capricorn belongs to the earth element meaning practicality, results and reality are of utmost importance to the mountain goat.  Earth signs place importance on security and being pragmatic.

Cancer belongs to the water element meaning feelings, sensitivity and psychic powers take center stage.

Out of the four elements the water signs tend to be the most expressive with their emotions.

Every astrological sign belongs to a modality and there are three modalities; cardinal, fixed and mutable.  The modality of a sign will give you clues about the nature and attitude of that sign.  Although opposite signs, both Capricorn and Cancer belong to the cardinal modality.  The cardinal signs like to start and initiate things; they tend to be the doers of the zodiac.  Capricorns best express their modality by taking leadership positions or becoming entrepreneurs.  Cancer, being a water sign, expresses their cardinal modality by initiating or stirring up feelings in others.  In relationships, Cancers need a deep emotional bond; they want their partners to open up to them and share their feelings.  This need for a deep emotional connection can make the sometimes stoic and icy Capricorn very nervous and anxious.  Capricorn is typically exposed to the harsher realities of life at a young age and learned to put their feelings aside in order to survive.

Every astrological sign is ruled by a planet and for Capricorn that planetary ruler is Saturn sometimes known as the Cosmic Taskmaster of astrology.  Keywords associated with Saturn are karma, restriction, responsibility, discipline, duty, patience and perseverance.  Wherever Saturn is placed in our birth charts lies some of our most important karmic lessons.  Being a strict taskmaster, Saturn won’t let us off the hook until we’ve learned our lessons.

Cancer is ruled by the moon, the luminary associated with the night and the unconscious.  The moon has a significant effect on our emotions and our moods hence the reason a full moon can be so very emotional for us.  Other keywords associated with the moon are mother, nurturing and home.  Like the other water signs, Cancer must have good boundaries otherwise they can become completely overwhelmed by not only their feelings but the feelings of those around them.

Full Moon in Cancer

This is a deep and intense full moon because Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, will be opposite the moon in Cancer and conjunct the sun in Capricorn.  Pluto likes to pull up what is hidden deep in our psyches and in this case it could be deep emotions we’ve stored or hidden away.  The purpose behind this isn’t to punish us but to help us purge ourselves of our emotional baggage and excess.  If we try to run away from our feelings because we think they would overwhelm us we may start to reach for things to deaden the pain like an excess of food, alcohol or sex.  After a year of sheltering in our homes and having limited contact with others many of us have become isolated and in turn gotten caught in a boring rut or routine.  A healthier way for us to deal with all of these pent up emotions could be to reach out to others. Call someone you haven’t spoken to in a while this could lift both your spirits.

Since Cancer relates to the home this would be a perfect time to change something about your living space; get some Feng Shui going.  You could clean out a closet as a ritual signaling to the Universe that you’re making space for the new.  Doing something like the aforementioned can help you get out of a lethargic or “what’s the use” frame of mind.  I feel like this first full moon of the year is a turning point for us and the first order of business is purging all the emotional buildup from the last year and a half.

Retrogrades

Venus the planet of love and beauty will remain in retrograde until January 29th so be patient with one another and skip the botox until after the 29th any cosmetic procedure is not a good idea under a Venus retrograde.

Mercury, the planet of communication and the Roman messenger of the gods, will turn retrograde on January 14 and this will last until February 3.  Try to chill out and not force anything during this time; let nature take its course.  Mercury retrograde is a time to slow down, get contemplative and re-think, re-do and re-evaluate.

Sun in Aquarius

Aquarius season will begin January 19 at 8:39 pm CST as the sun moves into the airy sign of the Waterbearer.  Aquarius season is the time to get your rebel on, fly your freak flag and do your own thing.  If you’ve been playing by others’ rules and giving up parts of yourself to make others happy or more comfortable; this is the time to liberate yourself.
