The moon is on her way to being full this Saturday September 10 in the watery sign of Pisces at 4:59 am CST. Full moons occur every month when the sun and moon are in opposite signs at the exact same degree. For this particular full moon the sun will be at 17 degrees of Virgo while the Moon will be in the opposite sign of Pisces at 17 degrees. When we’re dealing with an opposition in astrology we are dealing with a sense of tension; it’s as if the sun and moon have us in a tug of war pulling us in different directions and our goal is to try and find a sense of balance. Full moons are also a time when situations in our life can be brought to completion.
Zodiac Facts: Virgo & Pisces
Each astrological sign belongs to one of the four elements; fire, earth, air or water. Virgo belongs to the earth element meaning this is a sign that is focused on practicality and reality. Not one's for “airy-fairy” thinking, Virgo is looking for results in the physical world. Hard facts and analysis are Virgo’s strengths. Pisces is a water sign meaning emotions are of utmost importance. Pisces will use their feelings to make a connection with others however this sensitivity can get Pisces in trouble if they don’t have good boundaries; they have a tendency to absorb the feelings and pain of those around them. As you can see Virgo and Pisces need a little of what the other has, this is true of all astrological oppositions. So, one of the first things we can say about this full moon is some of us may need to loosen up and get in touch with our feelings (Pisces) while others may need to get their head out of the clouds and do something more practical (Virgo). Where do I need better boundaries? is a good question to ask ourselves during a full moon in Pisces. You may need some alone time to sort out your feelings and figure out what’s brewing inside you.
Zodiac Modalities: Mutable
Every zodiac sign belongs to one of the three modalities; cardinal, fixed or mutable and Virgo and Pisces both belong to the mutable modality meaning these two tend to be more adaptable, changeable and flexible. Unlike fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio & Aquarius) that can be resistant to change, Pisces and Virgo can adapt as situations shift and change. What do you need to surrender, change, let go? If something in your life isn’t working are you willing to try another solution?
Ruling Planets: Neptune & Mercury
The ruling planets involved in the full moon in Pisces are Neptune (Pisces) and Mercury (Virgo). Just like this current full moon, Neptune is also in Pisces giving us an added dose of this mystical energy. Neptune rules illusion, deception, mysticism, escape and psychic abilities. During this full moon some of us may get some serious intuitive hits or we may be down-right psychic. Dreams are also associated with Neptune and Pisces. This weekend would be a great time to pay attention to any dreams or psychic hits you get. If you have a journal you may want to jot down your dreams and any of your psychic impressions. You don’t have to try and figure out what it all means right away, just get it down on paper. Sit with it. Allow the messages to come to you. Mercury, the ruler of Virgo, rules analysis which certainly has it’s place but we have to be careful that we don’t get caught up in the obsession of trying to figure out what “it all” means. As mentioned above full moons create a sense of tension and the first bit of tension we may experience with this full moon would be our need to control and analyze (Virgo) vs our need to let go and surrender (Pisces). We may also see this tension play out as a battle between the practical and reasonable (Virgo & earth) vs the spiritual and imaginative (Pisces & water). If you are a more practical person this full moon could be pushing you to trust your gut and instincts a bit more. It’s during a Pisces full moon that our feelings could burst forth seemingly out of nowhere but if we’re completely honest with ourselves these feelings may have been brewing beneath the surface for quite some time.
Mercury Retrograde
Mercury, the planet of communication, intelligence, interpretation and transportation will go retrograde this Friday September 9 and won’t go direct until October 2. As I mentioned in another blog on this subject Mercury retrograde isn’t all bad. This is a time to re-think, re-evaluate, re-discover and even re-lax. Unplugging and slowing down is the higher spiritual purpose behind Mercury retrograde. It’s during these retrograde periods that we learn the Universe may have a much better plan for us than any plan we’ve cooked up for ourselves.
