The moon is on her way to being new this Tuesday, June 28 in the watery sign of Cancer at 9:52 pm CST. New moons occur every month when the sun and moon are in the same sign at the same degree; this is known as a conjunction in astrology. For this particular lunation the sun and moon will be at 7 degrees of Cancer. New moons are associated with new beginnings and are the perfect time to set new intentions and make wishes. The day before the new moon is known as the dark moon. In certain earth-centered magical traditions the dark moon is a time to get quiet and listen because our psychic vibe is on high. The dark moon is also a good time to clear out what is no longer useful to you; like cleaning out a closet or drawer.
Zodiac Facts: Cancer
Keywords associated with Cancer: feeling, home, family, mother, introspection, withdrawal, mood, nourishment, matriarchy, patriotism, sensitivity, shelter, sentimentality.
Every astrological sign belongs to one of the four elements; fire, earth, air and water and Cancer belongs to the water element. Being a water sign means feeling, emotion and intuition are of utmost importance to the Crab. At its most simplistic level this new moon in Cancer can stir up deep feelings especially those emotions linked to home, family and mother. Jupiter, the planet of expansion, will make a difficult aspect (a square) to this new moon. Idealism is a keyword associated with Jupiter so we may be called on to temper our overly idealistic expectations around home, family and mother. We could feel more possessive of the people closest to us or maybe even jealous if we feel an outside force is intruding on our most important relationships. Playing off the aforementioned keywords shelter and withdrawal, we may need some quiet time to ourselves to sort out our more complex feelings.
Another way to group the astrological signs is through their modality. A sign’s modality gives you clues to the nature and attitude of that sign and there are three modalities; cardinal, fixed and mutable. Cancer belongs to the cardinal modality meaning it’s a sign that likes to initiate and start things. Instead of sitting around analyzing and pontificating about life, Cancer has the urge to act, to initiate. So, if we take a keyword like home and combine it with Cancer’s cardinal modality of initiation we can see that some of us may start the process of looking for a new home or a new place to live.
Ruling Planet: The Moon
Each astrological sign is ruled by a planet and in the case of Cancer that planetary ruler is the moon. Technically in astrological terms, the sun and moon are actually called luminaries but most astrologers use the word planet as a kind of shorthand. The moon is associated with night and the unconscious. The moon has a significant effect on our emotions (keyword) and moods (keyword) and this is doubly true when the moon is in her own sign of Cancer. When a planet is placed in the sign it rules its called domicile. The moon in our chart relays to our conscious mind the things we need to feel secure, taken care of and safe. Related to the moon and the sign of Cancer is the 4th House, the part of our chart that’s associated with family, home, feelings and mother. Astrologically or magically speaking the sun is related to the masculine principle while the moon is linked to the feminine dynamic. Our sun sign is related to our outer world, what we are striving to become while the moon is who we are on a deep, soul level. If we’ve been placing too much emphasis on the outer like our careers and achievements this new moon may act as a wake up call to nurture the other part of ourselves; the soul. This is a time to ask ourselves what we need in order to feel safe, secure and content. We may be running ourselves ragged and now it's time to take a time out and listen to our own needs. Since the moon and the sign of Cancer are sensitive and intuitive this new moon would be a great time to get out your oracle or tarot cards and give yourself a reading. You can even do a new moon in Cancer reading by asking yourself and the deck you’re using; what do I need to know most during this new moon?
The obvious stone/crystal to work with at this time would be moonstone. Moonstone helps us reconnect with our intuitive, psychic selves.
