The moon is on her way to being new this Tuesday October 25 in the deep and watery sign of Scorpio at 5:49 am CST. This will also be a Solar Eclipse. New moons occur every month when the sun and moon are in the same sign at the exact same degree. For this particular lunation the sun and moon will be at 2 degrees Scorpio, this is known as a conjunction in astrology. New moons are the perfect time to set new intentions and make wishes, the day before the new moon is known as the dark moon. It’s believed that our psychic vibe is on high during a dark moon so this is a great time to get out your tarot and oracle decks and give yourself a reading for the coming month. Meditation is another activity that’s beneficial during a dark moon.
What is a Solar Eclipse?
As mentioned above this new moon is also a solar eclipse. Solar eclipses can only occur on a new moon. During a solar eclipse the moon is between the sun and the Earth, partially or totally blocking out the light of the sun. You can think of a solar eclipse as a more dramatic and hyped-up new moon and they have the potential to bring great change in our lives.
Keywords for a Scorpio New Moon
darkness, death, transformation, obsession, depth, intensity, occultism, secrecy, riches, obsession, potency, enigma, narcissism, regeneration, isolation, desire and chemistry.
As you can see from the keywords a Scorpio new moon is about going deep or going home, there’s no place for superficiality when Scorpio is in the house. Going deep is about “going there” in the feelings department; instead of pushing our feelings to the side we become willing to sit with and acknowledge our true feelings whether we find those feelings to be acceptable or not. Scorpio energy is about being effective instead of being popular. What are you afraid to look at? What are you afraid to feel? What are you afraid to admit to yourself?
Scorpio & the Element of Water
Each zodiac sign belongs to one of the four elements; fire, earth, air or water and Scorpio belongs to the water element, meaning feelings and intuition take center stage. During this solar eclipse new moon in Scorpio, we’re being challenged to pay attention to the subtle aspects of our being like our feelings and emotions. An intellectual understanding of your life right now won’t cut it. The earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) and the air signs (Libra, Aquarius and Gemini) may have a more difficult time handling this deep and intense feeling energy. With "obsession" as a keyword, we may find ourselves continuously ruminating about something that happened in the past that we can’t seem to let it go.
Astrology & Tarot: 5 of Cups
With the planet Venus making a conjunction to this solar eclipse our obsessive thinking could involve relationships; past or present. If we turn to the Tarot for amplification of this new moon we see the Five of Cups, titled Disappointment in the Thoth tarot, is the card linked to this solar eclipse. Some of us may be grieving the loss of a relationship or feel that relationships never seem to work out; we’re always left disappointed. We may be feeling vulnerable and fragile at this time. Our challenge is to feel and release our disappointment. We become willing to own our mistakes in the past and establish a new vision for ourselves regarding relationships. This is also a time to look at our expectations in relationships and how some of those expectations may have led to our current sense of disappointment and frustration.
Scorpio, Pluto, & the 8th House: Death & Rebirth
Scorpio is ruled by Pluto and linked to the 8th astrological house. All three of these (Scorpio, Pluto and the 8th House) are associated with death. In astrology and tarot, we’re reminded death is a part of life and the death we’re talking about has more to do with detachment, letting go and release rather than physical death. Jobs end, relationships end and certain eras or cycles of our lives come to an end. What has come to an end in your life? What do you need to release or let go of? However, with death there is also rebirth.
If something in your life is dying now the new moon in Scorpio encourages us to let the change happen, let go and know you will be reborn into newness. Whatever leaves your life at this time is making room for the new. A great ritual during this solar eclipse would be to clear out a closet or drawer. This puts the Universe on notice that you are ready to let go of the old and embrace the new.
A new moon in Scorpio brings our trust issues to the surface. When our trust issues are stirred up, our control issues aren’t far behind. Our lust for control can drive us crazy, so try to relax and let some things go, trusting and knowing that we don’t always know what’s best for ourselves. The Universe almost always has a much better plan for our lives.
