The moon is on her way to being new this Wednesday April 19 in the fiery sign of Aries at 11:13pm CST. New moons occur every month when the sun and moon are in the same sign at the same exact degree; in astrology this is known as a conjunction. For this lunation the sun and moon are both in the last degree of Aries at 29 degrees. New moons are about new beginnings and it’s the perfect time to set new intentions and make wishes. The day before the new moon is known as the dark moon. Dark moons are a time to get quiet, meditate and get rid of things you don’t use or need anymore. Our psychic sense is thought to be on high during a dark moon so this would be a great time to give yourself a tarot or oracle card reading.
This new moon is also a solar eclipse. Solar eclipses can only occur on a new moon. During a solar eclipse the moon is between the Earth and the sun and partially or totally blocks out the light of the sun. A solar eclipse can be thought of as a more dramatic and hyped-up new moon and they can bring great change to our lives. If we’ve been avoiding change it’s during a solar eclipse when we can be pushed or forced to try something new. This is the second new moon in Aries this year so this is a second chance at a new beginning if we missed it during the first new moon in Aries back in March. If we’ve been holding on to any “excess baggage” from the past now is the time to let it go.
Keyword for the New Moon in Aries: self-image, ego, confidence, aggression, initiation, vitality, spontaneity, bravery, enthusiasm, energy, heat, lust, leadership, appearance, new beginnings, attitude and force. Look over the keywords mentioned above and pay attention to the ones that jump out at you. Which keywords describe your life right now? As I mentioned in last month’s blog I’ve always felt the new moon in Aries is the most powerful new moon of the year and the most potent new moon because both Aries and new moons are linked to new beginnings. A solar eclipse makes the wishes and intentions we set right now all the more powerful. Jupiter and Chiron are also in the sign of the Ram giving this new moon solar eclipse an extra boost.
Tarot and the New Moon in Aries: We can turn to the tarot to help amplify the meaning of this full moon. The two card linked to this lunation are The Emperor (Aries) and the Four of Wands (last degrees of Aries). The Emperor card is the masculine, Father archetype of the tarot. The Emperor represents authority, power and fearlessness. This is the energy we want to tap into for this new moon and it doesn’t matter what your gender is, male or female we all have the Emperor archetype within us. Questions you can ask yourself right now are: Am I willing to take charge of my life? and Am I ready to level-up and take responsibility for my own decisions? Am I willing to stand up for what I believe in is another great question.
The Three of Wands is known as the card of Virtue in the Thoth tarot deck. The Three of Wands says we get honest about who we are and what we want. We can begin to move forward with our lives because we have a sense of integrity; we no longer have to lie about who we are or what we really want.
Taurus Season
Four hours after the new moon the sun moves into the sign of Taurus kicking off Taurus season. Taurus is an earth sign meaning we need to place an emphasis on practical results, security and the pragmatic. Taking things a step further, Taurus is the natural ruler of the 2nd astrological house; the sector of the astrological wheel that deals with finances, money and security. At it’s most basic level the topics of finances and security are at the forefront of our consciousness. Taurus belongs to the fixed modality meaning this is an energy that has staying power. So, come hell or high water we won’t give up on our goals and dreams, we stay the path.
Mercury retrograde
Two days after the new moon solar eclipse April 21, Mercury the planet of communication goes retrograde until May 14. During a Mercury retrograde we want to be careful about signing contracts. If you must sign during this time, and sometimes we must, just be sure you really look over everything very carefully. Since Mercury rules communication we also want to think twice about what we say during this planet’s retrograde period. A good rule of thumb in the communication department at this time; does it need to be said? does it need to be said by me? does it need to be said right now?
