What is a Reiki session?

Reiki is a Japanese technique that is used to relax and relieve stress for the purpose of healing. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words “Rei” which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and “Ki” which means “Life force energy”. It’s based on the idea that living beings have an energy field around them. Blockages in the energy field can relate to health, mental, emotional issues that the client is experiencing.

During the session, the practitioner will create a relaxing environment and discuss any issues that the client may be having. The client will often lay down on a table (similar to a massage therapist’s table). The practitioner will place their hands on or just above different areas of the body to move the energy around and release the blockages. There may be a discussion afterwards as to what came up for the client, methods of handling future situations, visualizations etc.

When should you get a Reiki session?

Anytime you would like. Here are some examples of when or why people book a session:

  • Relief from a stressful experience (hectic work or lifestyle)
  • Alleviation from chronic pain
  • Feeling stuck and not moving forward in life
  • To find mental clarity
  • Coping with grief
  • Relief from anxiety
  • Major life transitions
  • Connection to their spiritual path
  • Energy boost or needing to feel empowered

Consistency is key, particularly if you have something you want to work on. After your first session, most practitioners recommend having a session once a month.

How to prepare for your Reiki session:

Prior to your appointment, you may want to take some time to determine the intention of your reiki session. Find some quiet time to journal, think, or meditate on your needs. Be sure to share them with your practitioner as you go into the session.

Three to 4 hours before your session, it is advised that you refrain from eating heavy meals, consuming caffeine, sugar, or alcohol.

Be sure to wear comfortable, loose clothing. In terms of jewelry, you may want to remove any heavy items before the session begins. Right before your appointment, be sure to use the restroom so that you will not need to interrupt your session. Silence any devices that you have brought with you so that you do not get distracted.
