Creating a Magickal Text: The Witch's Grimoire

Throughout the ages, great scholars, philosophers, teachers, wise-elders and many people from every walk of life have sought to document their experiences, whether through the written word, photos, drawings/art, music, or storytelling. It is part of the human experience to pass on wisdom and the lessons learned in one’s life.

The Witch is no different. Witches have been known to keep a journal of sorts. You may have heard the terms, “Book of Shadows” and “Grimoire.” These refer to books of written text in which a Witch records their magickal workings, power thoughts, rituals, observances. As they progress in their knowledge of the Craft, the more they add to their written text. These magickal books were often passed down through the bloodline, sometimes they were passed from mentor to student, sometimes a Witch was known to take their secrets with them to the other side when they passed. This magickal text was an essential component on the Witch’s spiritual journey.

In this class, we will dive deep into the purpose and importance of keeping a magickal text. We will discuss the Grimoire/Book of Shadows throughout history, folklore, film, and story. We will also take time to discuss and consider how and why we may want to use such a valuable tool in our own personal practice.

Our hands on activity will be creating a modern day magickal journal (Book of Shadows or Grimoire if you want to get fancy with it) and bless our journals with intention through a small, but meaningful ritual.

This class and activity is open to anyone who wishes to learn. You do not have to be a practitioner of the Craft, nor do you have to self identify as a Witch or come from a particular tradition to keep a magickal journal for spiritual growth. In the ceremony, you will choose how you would like to bless your journal and your own intention for it.

The Purpose of the Into the Witch Ways Series:

Witches, Magick, Witchcraft, Pagans….Once these were extremely taboo topics. In recent years, they have been coming into the light of day, even in mainstream culture.

For many of us, the path has been traveled alone; we had to figure things out for ourselves and had to practice our Craft in solitude. We did not have a community to turn to, a culture to learn from, nor traditions passed down to us. While in plenty of ways the solitary path is a blessing, it is a lonely one, especially when you’re new to the practice and have no one to turn to for counsel or questions or celebration.

This class series is for anyone who has interest in learning about the Craft, whether a beginner who is just starting out or a seasoned practitioner who is looking for a different perspective. It is also for anyone who is looking for a witchy community. Anyone, from any background or spiritual practice is welcome. If you do not self identify as a Witch, that is perfectly okay. The information that you learn in this series is meant for you to consider for your own personal practice. Take what works and resonates with you, leave what doesn't.

The Craft is a multi-layered practice. Much more than outward spells, simples, and rites, it involves commitment to internal spiritual work and intuitive creation. Each class will cover a special topic in the world of Witching.  Each class will be dedicated to a different topic and will include informational discussion and creative, hands-on activities. There will be time throughout the class for community building and bonding, as well as questions and ideas from the participants.
