The moon is on her way to being full this Saturday April 16 in the airy sign of Libra at 1:55 pm CST.
Full moons occur every month when the sun and moon are in opposite signs at the exact same degree. For this particular lunation the sun is in Aries while the moon is in the opposite sign of Libra, both at 26 degrees. Full moons create a sense of tension and we can feel we’re being pulled in two different directions. Our goal is to try and find a sense of balance. Full moons can bring a process or situation to completion and cast light on what is hidden in our lives like secrets.
Zodiac Facts: Aries and Libra
During a full moon two signs are involved, the current sun sign and the moon sign. For this particular lunation we are looking at Aries (current sun sign) and Libra (current moon sign).
Every astrological sign belongs to one of the four elements and Aries belongs to the fire element meaning passion, enthusiasm and courage take center stage. Fire signs can be restless, passionate, dramatic and theatrical. Libra is an air sign meaning thinking, analysis and communication are of utmost importance. While fire signs lean toward the impulsive, air signs tend to take a step back and think through a situation before acting. On its most simplistic level the full moon in Libra can bring our attention to an area of our lives where we feel conflicted. For further meaning we can turn to the tarot. The card associated with the Aries portion of this full moon is the Four of Wands. In the Thoth Tarot this card is titled Completion and represents a coming together of opposites. We let go of an either or mindset and learn to integrate two opposing parts of our personality like love and anger. Instead of hiding or trying to cover up our anger we embrace it. What is this anger trying to communicate to me?
The Libra part of this full moon is represented by the Four of Swords which is titled Truce in the Thoth Tarot deck. Again we have this same theme of integration; we are learning to cultivate an attitude of tolerance within. Instead of blocking or denying the more difficult emotions we may be experiencing we allow these feelings to move through us so we can come to a truly authentic place of peace within. In certain psychological circles this is called “processing our emotions”.
In astrology each of the twelve signs belongs to a modality and there are three modalities; cardinal, fixed and mutable. Both Aries and Libra belong to the cardinal modality meaning these two signs like to initiate and start things. The cardinal signs are the doers of the zodiac. Instead of sitting around pondering your life; the full moon in Libra says stop thinking and start doing. Unlike Aries, Libra can resort to people-pleasing in order to avoid conflict. Remember, Libra is symbolized by the scales and prefers a harmonious balance in their environment. So a full moon in Libra can push us to act on our own behalf and risk the disapproval of others. Am I trying too hard to look nice and balanced? Am I avoiding conflict and keeping myself in a place of suffering?
Ruling Planets: Mars & Venus
Each astrological sign is ruled by a particular planet and for Aries that planetary ruler is Mars, the Roman god of war. In astrological terms Mars represents the masculine, active principle. For Libra that planetary ruler is Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty. While Mars represents the masculine, Venus rules the feminine, receptive principle. Again we can turn to the Tarot for amplification of this full moon. Mars is linked to the Tower card and signifies the change and awakening we need to break down and dismantle old, stale structures in our lives that hold us back and prevent us from growing. In other words, this full moon could trigger a breakdown that leads to a much needed breakthrough in your life.
Venus, the ruler of Libra, is linked to the Empress card and signifies the combination of love, nurturing and wisdom. In other words, the Empress card is about learning to love and nurture in a smart way. Loving and nurturing in a “smart” way means we don’t over give or over help others. We can “mother” not “smother” others with our love. In the modern self-help movement this is known as codependency. When we are in the throes of codependency we give in order to control another person. Do I have a trusting, open, balanced heart or a controlling, smothering, protective heart? The Empress card and Venus reminds us it's just as important to have self-love.
Neptune and Jupiter Conjunction
All week we’ve had a Neptune/Jupiter conjunction in the sign of Pisces. Although Jupiter and Neptune conjunct one another once every twelve years the last time they were conjunct in Pisces was 1856. Both planets actually have an affinity for one another because in traditional astrology Jupiter ruled both Sagittarius and Pisces. In modern astrology Jupiter kept its rulership of Sagittarius while Neptune was given rulership of Pisces. Both Jupiter and Neptune are linked to spirituality so this conjunction can produce a major spiritual awakening for all of us not to mention an increase in our psychic, intuitive skills. Jupiter is the planet of good luck, good fortune, blessings and miracles. Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac and is associated with endings and closure. Don’t be so quick to judge an ending as a loss, it’s most likely a blessing in disguise. We’re extra sensitive right now so it’s also important that we have good boundaries and take care of ourselves otherwise we can end up in an “over-giving”situation that I mentioned above leaving us feeling depleted and resentful. Pay extra close attention to your dreams right now, they could be quite prophetic.
